North Korea's Administrative Divisions
Overview
North Korea is divided into nine provinces and one special province-level municipality. These administrative divisions serve as the framework for the country's political, economic, and social organization.
Provinces
The nine provinces of North Korea are:
- Chagang
- Hamgyong-bukto
- Hamgyong-namdo
- Hwanghae-bukto
- Hwanghae-namdo
- Kangwon
- North Pyongan
- Ryanggang
- South Pyongan
Each province is further divided into counties, cities, and towns.
Special Municipality
The special province-level municipality is Pyongyang, the capital and largest city of North Korea. Pyongyang enjoys a high degree of autonomy and is directly controlled by the central government.
Elections
Elections are held in North Korea on a regular basis, but they do not decide the leadership of the country. The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) maintains an iron grip on power, and all candidates for elected offices must be approved by the party. The elections are primarily used to legitimize the existing government and demonstrate popular support for the WPK.
